Citizens Advice Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford are promoting a simple way to control your energy usage

Citizens Advice Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford are encouraging people to take control of their energy use with the help of a smart meter.

Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters being rolled out across Great Britain at no extra cost to households. They come with a handy in-home display, which can make life easier by showing you how much you are spending on gas and electricity in near-real time. Say goodbye to estimated bills and supplying meter readings yourself, as this is done automatically.

You won’t have an extra charge on your bill because you chose to have a smart meter. The costs will be spread across everyone’s bills, just like the cost of running and maintaining today’s traditional meters.

At the point of installation, your supplier will also offer you an in-home display at no extra cost. This shows you at a glance how much energy you are using and how much it’s costing you in pounds and pence. The smart meter installation process is straightforward and only takes a couple of hours.

Smart meters are safe and secure, only holding data on your meter reading and energy tariff. To find out more about the safety of your smart meter, check out our blog.

“Citizens Advice Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford’s Energy team has had a superb opportunity to work in partnership with the Smart Energy GB Team, sharing the benefits of Smart Meters in the home.

Through our commitment to engaging with the community, we've successfully alleviated clients' concerns about smart meters, employing myth-busting group sessions as one of our effective approaches.

This collaborative effort has provided clients with the valuable opportunity to not only learn about but also witness and comprehend how in-home displays operate, empowering them to take control of their energy consumption and embrace a more sustainable future.”

We recently participated in a local event, where we advocated for the advantages of upgrading your traditional gas and electricity meter to a smart meter. A client mentioned:

"For me, it works really well having a smart meter. I don't have to worry anymore about sending meter readings and I can just check the IHD when I want to, just to make sure my budget is on track."
